When’s the last time you contacted your favorite college professor? I know that you, like me, recognize the value of honoring the relationships we developed at our alma maters.
But how often do we actually take action to connect with our HBCU community? How often do we publicly thank our heroes?
Twenty five years ago, my friend Jeff established my first email account. He called me Voice of Morgan. I’d been announcing the Morgan State University football and basketball games for fifteen years at that point. The email moniker was set up in light fun, but it made sense.
I still use my Voice of Morgan email account. It’s a point of pride for me. I not only feel an obligation to my alma mater, Morgan State, but I feel a duty to represent the HBCU community every time I crack the microphone.
And the depth of that connection to my HBCU school has served me well. I’ve been named the 3rd most impactful Baltimore radio sports announcer, because I speak from the heart.
When I’m on the radio for the HBCU community, I’m talking with people I love. I don’t care if Morgan or North Carolina A & T wins a game — I’m inspired by the competition within this family of schools and I feel deeply connected.
(Ok, ok. I do always root for MSU. But I can accept a loss if it’s to another HBCU.)
The point is, I feel a strong connection to our school community and that resonates with listeners. They connect with me.
And that connection speaks to a greater world view and to YOUR part in it. If you want to change the world and achieve your dreams, your actions must be aligned with others. Standing alone may make a difference, but we are stronger together.
I see so many brilliant people fail to have an impact because their voices go unheard. They shout alone in the wilderness instead of building on their relationship with a powerful family: the HBCU community.
When I speak with a young person about their future, I tell them to study where they want their future to lie and to build connections with the right people.
If you want to grow your business or career, don’t just study your craft. Develop your network.
If you want to enhance education in your neighborhood, don’t just spend money on scholarships. Build relationships so that many shoulder the burden together.
HBCUs are the cultural home of African Americans. The HBCU family is our network and we should honor those among us who make a difference.
When’s the last time you gave a shout-out to someone special in the HBCU community? When you recognize a professor, a classmate, or a coach who affected your life, you not only acknowledge that person publicly, but you start a conversation with your community. You make a connection.
I know of no better place to connect with the HBCU community than Heritage Sports Radio Network (HSRN.com).
HSRN is the Voice of HBCU Sports. We host the most HBCU sports matchups. And we feature discussion critical to our community on topics like wellness, economics, and education. We’re here to entertain, inform, and engage as we unify.
And HSRN wants to help you connect with your HBCU community.
Gift your hero with a Shout-Out. We’ll announce the special announcement from you, live on the air on HSRN.com.
Give a Shout-Out to:
-
College friends, rivals, or teammates.
-
A professor or administrator who changed your life.
-
A coach who pushed you to the limit.
-
An HBCU member who means something to you.
Honor your heroes and re-energize your connection to the HBCU community with a Shout-Out.
Your purchase will alert the world to your hero’s positive impact. It will also support HSRN’s unrivaled HBCU sports coverage and efforts to connect individuals across our community and its millions of members.
Sometimes just a little reaching out can change everything. When an old professor hears your name, they may think of you for a special opportunity or recognition. And the rest of the community will know that you care about them.
Shout Out right now! Your voice is more critical than ever.
Thank you.
